Hike Details:
The Van Lone Hill Loop is comprised of the main white-blazed Finger Lakes Trail and the orange-blazed Van Lone Hill trail in Connecticut Hill Wildlife Management Area. We will begin and end at the Gulf Road trail-head. The primary natural features of this hike include the beautiful, narrow Cayuta Outlet, which could be running with fast water, a nice view of an unnamed creek and a small stand of old growth trees of various species, some up to 150 years old.
The hike is rated Strenuous due to the 1000 ft elevation gain and length of the hike.
Bring at least a liter of water, lunch or snacks, wear layered, warming clothing and sturdy, water resistant hiking boots. Bring traction footwear (Microspikes, Stabilizers, Nanotracks, etc) or snowshoes, depending on conditions. Hiking poles are highly recommended. Trail conditions vary wildly this time of year so come prepared and be aware that there is likely more snow and/or ice on this trail than in Ithaca.
The Gulf Road trail-head is about a 40 minute drive from Ithaca. Help reduce our collective carbon footprint by carpooling if you are coming from Ithaca. (See carpool location/time above.)
Email the hike leader if you have questions.
