Detailed Hike Description

Gundy Lee leads tonight’s hike to Upper Buttermilk Falls State Park and a part of the Buttermilk Spur of the Finger Lakes Trail. We will hike the Bear Trail, the trail that circumnavigates the lake, and a part of the Buttermilk Spur. The exact route will depend on availability of open trails. If the upper Buttermilk loop around Lake Treman is open, we will do a “lolly-pop” shaped route, or, if you prefer, a loop trail around Treman Lake with a spur trail added. If the loop around the lake is still closed due to flooding, we will do more of an out-and-back route. There are some steep pitches to navigate on this one. If you struggle on steep uphills, you might want to join us on another Tuesday hike.

Starting and endpoint is the first parking area near the Upper Pavilion, which is inside Upper Buttermilk Falls State Park. From Ithaca, take Route 96B south. Pass Ithaca College. At the the next traffic signal, turn right on West King Rd. The park entrance is about 1/2 mile down West King. Turn left to enter the park and stop at the first parking area, near a picnic pavilion.

Event Report

Upper Buttermilk Falls, Tuesday, May 14, 2024

Nine hikers were signed up for this hike.  One hiker cancelled before and one hiker was a no show so seven of us started this hike.  The day was lovely, warm but not hot with a nice breeze to cool us off more.  We hiked the Bear Trail and thdn to the end of Lake Treman.  The bridge was still out and probably will be for quite a while.  We looked to see if we could cross the water to the other side but it was still too deep.  We turned around and took the FLT spur to Yaple Road.  One hiker had to leave before we hiked the spur. When we arrived back at the wooden bridge and falls, three more hikers left to go home.   Three of us were left and we hiked the LT to the damn and then to the overlook which is such a  beautiful spot to see all of Lake Treman.  Most of us also enjoyed the abundance of wildflowers on this hike.

Addendum–the site has listed all the hikers who signed up even for the hike that had to be cancelled.  How does one get rid of the names?  Thanks, Gundy
