Brief Hike Details

This is an out-and-back hike on the Finger Lakes Trail in Treman State Park in Enfield/Newfield, rated moderate.

If a second hike leader can be found, there will be two hikes offered on this route: a short hike and a long hike. Choose one:

The short hike will go approximately four miles. The group will stop frequently to observe flora and whatever wildflowers are visible.

The long hike will go approximately seven miles, as far as the bridge over Fish Kill Creek, and will be led by David Priester. This hike will go at a faster pace.

Both hikes begin and end at the lower parking area for Lick Brook Preserve near the intersection of NY State Routes 13/34/96, four miles south of Ithaca.

Dress for warm weather, wear sturdy waterproof boots, and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Trekking poles recommended if you have them.

If you will have trouble navigating to the trailhead, email the hike leader at the address above.

Check this space the day of the hike for any changes or a cancellation.

Detailed Hike Description

The hikes tonight will take us through Treman State Park on the Finger Lakes Trail, rather than the more-traveled Rim and Gorge Trails.

There may be a short hike option in addition to a long hike option led by David Priester. The short hike will go at a slower pace to enjoy the flora and whatever wildflowers still are present, and will go as far as the group wishes, then turn around and return to the cars. Hikers on the long hike will go at a faster pace and will go as far as the bridge spanning Fish Kill Creek, then head back downhill to the cars.

The hikes start at the parking area used for the Lick Brook Preserve on Routes 13/34/96. For those not familiar with it, this parking area is unmarked and difficult to see from the highway, but it has recently been improved with paving, a gravel surface for the parking area and a very nice information kiosk. We are indebted to our friends at the Finger Lakes Land Trust for these amenities.

Hiking up the gorge is strenuous with some long uphill stetches and steep grades but we will take it at a moderate pace and stop as needed to appreciate what nature has to offer, and to catch our breath.

Dress for warm weather, wear sturdy waterproof boots, and bring plenty of water so that you can stay well hydrated. Trekking poles recommended if you have them.
