Hike Description
Taughannock Falls State Park is a beloved local landmark, with Gorge and Rim Trails that showcase a spectacular gorge incised into bedrock, and a stunning “hanging valley” falls. This Park also has other, less visited trails that we will explore on this hike. We will meet at the Jacksonville parking area at Upper Taughannock, and start with a walk up a new trail that follows Taughannock Creek upstream. This trail was built last year by Professor Marvin Pritts (Cornell botanist) and his students. We’ll then take a quick visit to my favorite viewpoint in Upper Taughannock gorge, before crossing the railroad trestle and following the North Rim Trail to the falls overlook. After admiring that wonderful view, we’ll then take a loop through the less traveled trails in the northern section of the park, before returning to our starting point.
Shorter Hike Options: Our route allows hikers to choose 1 mile or 2 mile options (we will pass close to the parking area each time). Additionally, those willing to navigate back from the Falls Overlook to the Upper Taughannock (Jacksonville Rd) parking area on their own, have the option to hike about 3 miles.
Wear sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing appropriate to the weather conditions, and bring water and a snack/lunch. Hiking poles are recommended.
