Detailed Hike Description
This week’s hike takes us to Shindagin Hollow State Forest and adjacent private property in rural Caroline. We will begin on Old 76 Road and head southwest for 90 minutes, then turn around and retrace our steps back to the cars. One of the nicest parts of this section of trail runs parallel to, and at the edge of, Shindagin Hollow. If our hiking pace allows, we will pass by Shindaigin Hollow Creek twice, and get to see a nice little cataract that flows in high water.
Evidence of trail work is abundant: an older footbridge over Boyer Creek that had a new deck installed a few years ago by Cayuga Trails Club, Shindagin Lean-to, rebuilt in 2004 by a Finger Lakes Trail Conference Alley Cat Crew, a footbridge over the creek rebuilt in 2013 by another Alley Cat crew, with an extended ramp added in 2020 by the club. This area was once inhabited by Native Americans and later settled by Europeans, and we hike by a foot path likely used by the former.
Wear sturdy boots, bring water and insect repellent if you use it. Wear light-colored long pants and long-sleeved shirt. Wear gaiters or tuck your pants into your socks. Check for ticks after the hike.
Bring water, wear sturdy, broken-in waterproof hiking boots or shoes, bring insecticide if you use it, and dress appropriately for the weather.
This is tick season. Light colored, long pants, long sleeve shirt, and gaitors recommended. Post hike shower to identify ticks recommended.
