Hike Details:

This hike is one-way with a shuttle.  We will meet at our endpoint on Tehan Rd (see trailhead information), leave most cars there, and shuttle to our start point at Roy H Park Preserve North.  The preserve lies in the valley between Hammond Hill State Forest and Yellow Barn State Forest.  In the past decade, the Finger Lakes Land Trust has acquired land to expand Yellow Barn so that the two forests and preserve would provide connected protected lands across the hills and valley.

From the parking area at Roy H Park North, we head west uphill through a section of Yellow Barn that has no trails and then connect to old roads, snowmobile trails, and skiing trails in the higher sections of the state forest.  In 4-ish miles, we end our hike at Tehan Road.

Please note that we will be bushwacking on part of this route, total elevation gain is about 500 feet, and that there may be downed trees and muddy areas that we cross on the informal network of trails.

  • Wearing permethrin-treated clothes and/or using insect repellents, as well as checking for ticks afterward is advised. Consider using insect-repellent mid-spring through mid-fall.
  • When conditions might be icy or snowy, bring traction footwear devices (Microspikes, Nanospikes, etc.) to the trailhead. If conditions require snowshoes, the hike leader will let participants know beforehand.
  • Always check the website for last minute announcements and possible cancellations. Contact the hike leader if you have any questions.
