Detailed Hike Description
Our destination is Robinson Hollow State Forest, about a 25 minute drive east of Ithaca. The hike begins at the Robinson Hollow Rd parking area near the Tompkins/Tioga County line off Rt 79.
A long hike and a short hike are being offered. Choose one: Short Hike will go 4-5 miles out-and-back and will be led by Polley McClure; Long Hike will go 7 miles to Harford-Slaterville Road and will be led by Gary Mallow.
The trail starts with a steep, half-mile climb out of the valley of the West Branch of Owego Creek. Once we get to the top of the hill, we’ll be rewarded with a particularly quiet and peaceful section of the FLT. The only sounds you are likely to hear are the conversation with your fellow hikers, footfalls, and bird song. Along the way, we’ll stop at the Kimmie Lean-to. The turn-around point will be where the Finger Lakes Trail reaches the Harford-Slaterville Rd.
Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes, bring water and snack/lunch, and insect repellent if you use it. Hiking poles are highly recommended.
Directions from Ithaca to the Robinson Hollow State Forest parking area: go east on Rt 79, through the small village of Slaterville Springs. Immediately after the bridge over the West Branch of Owego Creek, turn left on Robinson Hollow Rd. Continue 0.3 miles to trailhead parking on the left side of the road.
If you will have trouble navigating to the trailhead, email the hike leader at the address above.
Check this space the morning of the hike for any changes or a cancellation.
