Join Gary Mallow for this rigorous eight-mile hike rated strenuous in Morgan Hill State Forest, Onondaga County. The route takes us past Spruce Pond, up and around a shady and cool stand of conifers on Fellows Hill, then down and up again as we climb a steep incline into a wet, muddy area. The work is worth it, as it leads us to the hang glider jump off point. From there, assuming clear weather, we’ll take time to enjoy a majestic view of the valley from this spot, and will get a bite to eat. Following lunch, it’s an easy, breezy hike downhill and back to the cars.
You have the option of carpooling from Ithaca or meeting the group at the trailhead parking area. If you are joining us to carpool, meet at Eastern Mountain Sports, Ithaca. Note there is a one-hour drive to the trailhead from Ithaca. Wear sturdy waterproof hiking boots or shoes, bring water and lunch.
There are several trailheads on Shackham Road that we have used in the past. This time, we start at a trailhead that could be new to some hikers: the Spruce Pond trailhead on Herlihy Hill Road. Contact the hike leader at the email address above for any questions. Check this space the morning of the hike for any changes or a cancellation.
