HIKE DESCRIPTION

Our hike on the Lansing Center Trails includes 3 small and one large loop around the perimeter of abandoned farm fields, view some old farm houses, and explore a trail along the abandoned railroad berms of the Ithaca-Auburn Short line and the never completed Murdock line.  Along the way, we’ll discuss the history of railroads, mining, and trails in Lansing.

The water and mud on the Lansing Center Trail is too deep for hiking, too shallow for kayaking, and the ice too thin for skating. So I propose an alternate on mostly hardened surfaces:

Meet at (P1) Hartill Park on Northwoods Drive at 10:00. Northwoods heads west from Warren Rd a few hundred feet south of the airport entrance. This is a 1.3 mile walk with two out-and-back spurs on hardened paths. Then (optionally) drive to (P2) 19 Brown Rd, the first right turn shortly after turning in the airport entrance. This is a 1.9 mile walk on sidewalks, hardened pedestrian paths, and parking lots.

Please check this page the evening before the hike for trail conditions. Your clothing and equipment must be suitable for a winter hike, for example: traction devices, possibility of snowshoes, warm footwear, hand wear, and head wear. CDC quality face masks are required when 6-10 foot distancing is not possible.
