Saturday 04/25/2026 10:00 am

Hike rating:

Distance – 6.1 miles; Terrain – Moderate; Pace – Moderate; Overall rating – Moderate

Event/Trailhead location:

Directions to the parking location on Owego Hill Rd (click for map) where one can access the Spanish Loop trail are tricky.  Note: Owego Hill Road north of the pin location in the linked map is a seasonal road and should not be used to access this parking location.    Instead, drive up either Adams Road and then turn left onto Owego Hill Road or turn onto Owego Hill Road from route 221 in Hartford NY;  if coming from route 221, be sure to turn right to stay on Owego Hill Road at the intersection with Adams Road.

Park along Owego Hill Road just after the intersection with Adams Road.  The first car will determine which side of the road will be used for parking.  All subsequent cars should park on the same side of the road as the first car.  Do not park in the snowplow turn around!

Hike Details:

This hike, which is a loop, is mostly in the Kennedy State Forest but does cross privately owned land.  It starts on Owego Hill Road and heads east and then north on the Spanish Loop Trail until it intersects with the Finger Lakes Trail (FLT).  It then turns left onto the FLT and heads westward towards Daisy Hollow Road.  Here the route follow a lovely creek.  At Daisy Hollow Road there is a 3/4 mile road walk on the FLT until it meets the Spanish Loop trail again at which point the route turns east and uphill.  Near the end of the loop, there is a left turn onto Adams Road followed by a short road walk to the starting point.
The hike utilizes the 3.5 miles of orange blazed Spanish Loop Trail and 2.6 miles of the white blazed FLT.  This well maintained loop hike intersects several other trails along the way.  While hiking the loop, you will experience a 782 elevation gain, stream crossings, a semi-vertical mossy spring and an amazing forest.  The trail maintainer has placed benches and chairs at various spots so hikers can contemplate the loop’s amazing features.
