Detailed Hike Description
This hike takes us on the Onondaga Trail, which is not often included in our hike roster due to the distance from home. However the nice hike is well worth the drive. The hike consists of an ascent of 1075 feet to Jones Hill, a hang glider jump-off location. Assuming clear weather, the view over the valley below and Labrador Pond is quite nice. We’ll stop briefly to have a snack or a sandwich and then head back to the cars, first checking out Tinker’s Falls, then doing a steep uphill ascent before we head down the hill on a steep but manageable descent. If you struggle with uphill pitches, you might want to join us another time.
This section of the FLTC network of trails is very well maintained by our colleagues of the Onondaga Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK). ADK Onondaga is a very active hiking club based in Syracuse, with a full schedule of weekly local hikes, snowshoe and ski outings, and frequent outings to the Adirondacks and Catskills.
We start and end from the middle trailhead on Shackham Road. Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots and bring water. Hiking pole and gaiters recommended. There is mud on this section.
To discourage ticks, wear light-colored long pants, long sleeve shirt, and bring insecticide or an organic repellant if you use it. Gaitors recommended. Post-hike shower recommended to identify ticks.
