FLT in Treman State Park

Saturday 01/15/2022 10:00 am

Hike rating:

Distance – 5-6 miles; Terrain – Moderate; Pace – Moderate; Overall rating – Moderate, with a few sustained climbs

Event/Trailhead location:

We will meet at the cabin parking lot at Lower Robert H. Treman State Park. To get there, follow Route 13 south out of town and turn right on Route 327 and left after about a tenth of a mile into the park entrance. Follow the park road for approximately 0.7 miles. Follow the road as it curves to the left, not entering the main parking lot. Shortly after crossing Enfield Creek on a bridge the cabin parking area will be on your right-hand side. The road is closed for the season shortly beyond the parking lot, so you can’t go too far wrong. (click for map).

Detailed Hike Description

We will ascend the ridge on the south side of the gorge on a gravel service road, enabling us to hike side-by-side and socialize. We will continue on the service road until shortly beyond the Sierra Lean-to, where we will join the Finger Lakes Trail to continue our climb.

We will follow the Finger Lakes Trail until it meets the Rim Trail, which we will follow back to the beginning. The Rim Trail provides an overlook of Lucifer Falls (spectacular in any season, but particularly in its winter finery) after which it descends the Endless Stairway to the water level before following the gorge in ascents and descents to an overlook of Lower Treman Falls.

*Note: the Endless Stairway has not been closed as of January 4th. If it is closed when we get there, we will return by the way we came, increasing the length to a little over six miles. If it is open we will descend slowly.

The hike will be about three hours long. Bring something to drink and eat with you.

Dress in layers. You are likely to warm up when climbing then cool off during the descents.

Bring some sort of traction devices for your feet. We discourage broken bones.

Weather conditions may influence the hike details. The weather forecast should be clear by the night before the hike, so any changes to the plan will be included in the message that will be sent to recipients then.
