Brief Hike Details

This is a 3 mile loop hike rated easy at the Ellis Hollow Nature Preserve east of Ithaca, owned and managed by the Finger Lakes Land Trust.

We will do the loop at the preserve twice to get some mileage in. If you prefer a shorter hike, you can easily opt out of the second loop and hike out to your car.

The trails in this preserve are relatively short, but not easy. There are some steep sections and creek crossings.

Dress in layers for the weather, wear sturdy waterproof hiking boots and bring water. Bring hiking poles if you have them.

If you will have trouble finding the trailhead, email the hike leader at the address above.

Check this space the morning of the hike for any changes or a cancellation.

Detailed Hike Description

From the Finger Lakes Trail Land Trust:

Ellis Hollow is a fern-carpeted 111-acre preserve on the northern hillside of the Ellis Hollow valley east of Ithaca. In the spring and summer, the preserve’s quiet, steep-sided glens ring with the songs of Winter Wren, Louisiana Waterthrush, Hermit Thrush, Veery, Black-throated Green Warbler, and other denizens of hemlock-lined ravines. After a short dodge through a power line right of way and a walk past the Dominion Transmission Plant, we will soon be on a quiet, well maintained trail under tall, straight oaks, ash, and black birch. Later in the hike, we’ll be in a hemlock grove. We will do two loops of the preserve trails.
