Detailed Hike Description
Tonight’s adventure features opportunities to see two natural areas in one evening: the Edwards Lake Cliffs Preserve, and the Lansing Center Trail. We will shuttle cars between locations.
From Cornell Botanic Gardens website: the 84-acre Edwards Lake Cliffs Preserve protects one of the rarest environments in the local region – the lake cliffs. The other salient feature of the preserve is Shurger Glen, cut by Gulf Creek, which gives rise to Portland Point. This is a forested ravine and winding gorge with breathtaking waterfalls, scenic views and rare species. The preserve was once cultivated farm land, but like much of our region, it now consists of rapidly encroaching shrub thickets and successional forest. There is old forest on, and upslope of, the lake cliffs.
The Lansing Center Trail was a project initiated by the Town of Lansing’s Pathways Committee as a community resource for Lansing residents. The trail circumnavigates several old farm fields. There are interpretive signs, bluebird boxes, and other features of this short town trail maintained by a collaboration of the Town of Lansing and volunteers. It’s a wonderful example of what can be achieved by local volunteers with limited resources who want to provide their neighbors with an accessable town trail.
Dress for the weather, bring sturdy hiking boots or shoes and water. There is a bit of driving on this one, but it’s worth the inconvenience. To be good neighbors and respectful of the residents of Lansing, when parking please do not to block mail boxes or driveways when parking.
