Hike Details:
This hike begins and ends at the Finger Lakes Land Trust Eberhard Preserve on Coddington Road. The 5.5 mile route starts with the steep 700 foot climb to the south end of the Eastman Hill Ridge. From there the route follows the ridge north on the FLT passing near the summit of Eastman Hill then looping around the north slope of the hill on abandoned trails and logging roads. Joining the abandoned part of Eastman Hill Road the route takes in another part of the Finger Lakes Trail crossing Heisey Road twice then following the abandoned part of Heisey Road back to the ridge top. On the way from there back to the starting point the route follows the FLT and abandoned roads. Along the way there are cellar holes from long ago farms and a large well near one of them.
The area covered in this hike was assembled over a multi year period through a cooperative effort between the Finger Lakes Land Trust, the FLTC, and the NYDEC. Three previously private land holdings are now part of Danby State Forest. The Eberhard Preserve was generously given to the Land Trust by the Eberhard family. The Finger Lakes Trail was relocated to this route by Cayuga Trails Club members on a National Trails Day project.
