Detailed Hike Description
This week’s destination is the eastern section of Danby State Forest. This is an “out and back” hike starting and ending at the South Danby Road trailhead of the Finger Lakes Trail.
We’ll hike east as far as the Tamarack Lean-to, then retrace our steps and return to the cars. For those who want a little bit of a hill, we can wander down to the water source for the Lean-to campsite. This spring outlet has provided some water even during the long dry periods encountered in recent years.
Directions from Ithaca: take Route 96B south through the hamlet of Danby. Continue traveling south until you reach South Danby Road, about 8.2 miles from downtown Ithaca. Turn right on South Danby Road and travel 1.5 miles until you reach the trailhead parking on the right side of the road.
Bring water, sturdy waterproof hiking boots or shoes, and dress for the weather.
If you will struggle with navigation, email Charlie at the address above.
