Hike Details:
This is an orienteering event run by the Central New York Orienteering Club. On their events page they specifically say that it is “open to everyone – beginners welcome!”
There are 24 controls in the park and the objective is to find as many of them as you can in a 90 minute period, starting at noon. You can approach this competitively if you like, but it’s also fine to participate recreationally, using it as another excuse to spend time in the forest.
Registration with the Central New York Orienteering Club (CNYO) required, including a $5.00 registration fee.
Wear sturdy boots (there will undoubtedly be some off-trail stretches) and dress in layers for the weather and be prepared if precipitation is in the forecast.
If you need help with navigation, email the hike leader at the address above.
Detailed Event Description
Participants will be provided with a map before the start of the event at noon. Based on your ability and how much of a challenge you want, you can choose which and how many of the 24 controls you want to try to visit within the 90 minute event.
If you’re interested, but not feeling confident in your orienteering skills, it is fine to team up with somebody who has more experience.
Google maps says that it takes a little over an hour to get from Ithaca to the event site. Participants will want to arrive early to review the map and plot a strategy.
If you have an orienteering compass (one that is mounted on a clear rectangular base plate) please bring it. There will be a few loaner compasses available.
Wear sturdy boots (there will undoubtedly be some off-trail stretches) and dress in layers for the weather and be prepared if precipitation is in the forecast.
If you need help with navigation, email the hike leader at the address above.
This event is not a CTC event. The CNYO web page for this event says, “Event is held rain or shine or snow.” Of course, your are encouraged to use your own judgement.
