Detailed Hike Description

Tonight’s destination is the western half of the Cayuga Waterfront Trail, which now includes about a half mile of paved path through the old dog park near Treman Marina. In clear weather this hike provides a nice view of the south end of Cayuga Lake. We start and end at the last parking area at the south end of the Flood Control Channel on Floral Avenue, hike as far as the south end of the lake, turn around and retrace out steps to the cars. Could be cold and blustery, but the view up the lake around sunset is usually pretty good and worth the hike.

The Waterfront Trail is almost entirely paved. It is an urban, well maintained multiuse trail with no elevation change, designed to give everyone access to the Cayuga Lake waterfront. It is enjoyed by walkers, runners, moms with baby strollers, people in wheelchairs, skaters, bikers, and kids.

The trail is a joint effort of the Cayuga Waterfront Trail Initiative, the City of Ithaca, and the Chamber of Commerce. Major funding was provided by our tax dollars, but Cayuga Trails Club contributed over $3,000 towards its completion. Dozens of other groups, couples and individuals joined us in providing financial support for the trail. Our donations are honored with inscribed bricks at the Cass Park kiosk and on trailside benches. The trail was completed in 2015 after a 14 year process of planning, negotiation and construction, and work continues to enhance it.

Dress in layers according to the weather, wear sturdy boots and be prepared for icy or slippery trails. If we have snow, most of the trail will usually be plowed, but there are snow-covered and icy sections that aren’t cleared. Traction devices like micro spikes are a good idea. Bring water.
