Detailed Hike Description

Tonight’s hike takes us to the south end of the Interloken Trail and parts of the Finger Lakes Trail. For most of our hike, we will traverse parts of the Finger Lakes National Forest, New York’s only National Forest.

The forest has a history like much of New York, where our predecessors lived an agrarian life. Most made their living as farmers, loggers, mill workers, shop owners and the like. The Great Depression of the 1930’s deeply affected these early settlers and the land they called home, as many could not find markets for their produce or work of any kind. The depression led to the abandonment of much of rural New York, and, ultimately, much of that land was designated as public land, what we know today as State Forest and National Forest.

Today, the National Forest is a mecca for outdoor recreation of all kinds: hiking, snowshoe outings, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, hunting, camping and other outdoor putsuits. A portion of the forest is set aside as summer pasture for cattle. Conservation of the resource is part of the overall management plan too.

We will be hiking up (and down) steep terrain.  If you struggle on steep uphill pitches, you might want to join us another time.
