Event/Trailhead location:
Part of trying to schedule Adopt-A-Highway is trying to settle upon dates and times that are convenient and will result in high participation. Between Wednesdays at 5:30 PM and Sundays at 10 AM we could have anywhere from 3 to 10 participants where 8 was the ideal. The problem was that we were tied to using the Cornell lot and that meant we were restricted to off hours. That meant that in April and October we were fighting to beat an early dusk which has poor visibility for drivers on Route 366.
Recently I was able to obtain permission from the Varna Community Center to use their lot (actually the grass behind the building). This allows an earlier afternoon start before dinner. This will involve a shuttle to the Cornell stretch which I will do the driving both ways. It is an experiment after all with our last one of the year with the object in mind that to get adequate numbers of volunteers we need to discover when that is.

Hike Details:
Please come join us for about 1.5 hours in service to the community of Varna and Cornell University.
We cover a 2.1 mile section from Cornell at Pine Tree Road to the far side of the town of Varna. We split it all into 4 subsections of about a half mile each. With hopefully two or more to a team, that is a light one mile walk using mechanical grabbers. Heavy objects or things like masks and medical waste should be left and brought to the leaders attention.
It’s as much a social event as anything with lots of chatter, laughs and the occasional weird find. And we’ve been known to hit Collegetown Bagels on nearby East Hill afterwards. It’s fun. It’s important. And Varna loves us for our service.
