Hike Details:

The paddle begins at the Saunders Finger Lakes Museum – Creekside Center which leads to an ADA-accessible boat launch in Sugar Creek.  The museum is currently being constructed and should be a fine an interesting addition to the area. Launching from here puts you right onto Sugar Creek, a quiet, biodiverse inlet that flows south into Keuka Lake or extends a mile or more north through a pristine, forested stream channel perfect for spotting wildlife like Great Blue Herons and kingfishers. Depending on wind conditions, the paddle will continue on Keuka Lake to the Keuka Lake State Park, and further south on the shore if desired.  This paddle event includes an optional hike at the adjacent Townsend-Grady Wildlife Preserve trails – established by the Museum.  The Preserve is a 16-acre protected wetland area adjacent to Crescent Beach. It features scenic hiking trails and a boardwalk that terminates at a beautiful lakeside octagon pavilion built via timber-frame community classes. The trail can be reached by car or it has a small craft dock where paddlers can tie off.  Also depending on interest, a stop can be made on the way home at the Garrett Memorial Chapel on Skyline Drive. The Chapel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is renowned for its Norman Gothic architecture, intricate stained-glass windows, and a panoramic lake view.
