HIKE DESCRIPTION
Taughannock Falls State Park is rightfully famous for its spectacular waterfall and gorge, but its lakeshore is also lovely. Assuming no cold wind is blowing, the shoreline is a beautiful place to hike and explore in winter! After meeting at the parking area by the Swimming Beach, we will head north, enjoying the lake views, looking at driftwood and shells, and admiring the old park structures and arched bridges over Taughannock Creek and its floodplain. And also, because its hard not to, we will also hike the Gorge Trail up to the waterfall.
Important Note:
If it’s too windy for a lakeshore hike, we will instead meet at the Falls Overlook parking area and hike up to the railroad trestle and along the upper section of the Black Diamond Trail. An email will be sent out to all registered hikers the night before to confirm the parking and hike locations.
Dress in warm, layered clothing, wear sturdy winter boots, and bring traction footwear (and snowshoes, depending on conditions), water and a snack. Hiking poles may be useful.
