Our destination tonight is Treman State Park, home to Lucifer Falls and one of the most lovely and dramatic vantage points in central New York.
The park was a gift, part of a land donation that also included Buttermilk Falls State Park, given to the people of New York by Robert and Laura Treman in the 1920's. A significant part of the park's history includes the extensive work done by the boys of the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression in the 1930's and early 1940's.
The gorge trail along Enfield Creek periodically suffers serious damage during high water events, including heavy rain in 2013 and 2015. In the aftermath of both storms, the trail was closed for months. Park workers and contractors repaired the stone work following both events.
Parts of this hike will qualify for the Hike 100 Challenge with the North Country Trail Association. Mileage will be calculated at the hike.
We will start at the parking area used for the Lick Brook Preserve on Routes 13/34/96. From there, we will hike along a small section of the Finger Lakes Trail and unmaintained trail to reach the park's South Rim Trail and Gorge Trail. We will hike up past Lucifer Falls, which is not to be missed when Enfield Creek is running. Heading downstream and back to the cars, we use the South Rim Trail and the Finger Lakes Trail, finishing where we started at the Lick Brook Preserve parking area.
Hiking up the gorge is extremely strenuous with long uphill stetches and steep grades. If you are not good on steep uphill pitches, you might consider joining us on another Tuesday. This one is not for newbies.
Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes and bring water.
Starting and endpoint is the lower Lick Brook Preserve parking area. If you are unfamiliar with this parking area, email Gary. As a last resort, Gary will stop at EMS promptly at 4:30 p.m. to guide you.
