The venerable Tamarack Lean-to, located between Route 96B and Travor Rd. in Danby State Forest, has been dismantled, but we have some final preparation work in and around the outhouse. We'll tip it back upright, check for damages, and assess what our options are for the future. Actual repair or replacement will happen when the entire lean-to crew arrives to begin work on June 25th.

Resetting the old outhouse, which is pretty hefty, in a vertical position will require the combined strength of 5 or 6 strong people. Depending on its condition, we may dig a new pit and move the outhouse to it. Assuming we have a quorum of volunteers, we shoud only be in the woods for two or three hours. This project will be short and sweet.

Regarding the rest of the work site: salvaged lumber and logs from the old lean-to have already been sorted and stacked and the footprint for the new shelter has been cleared and raked. We are anticipating a crew from Region 7, Department of Environmental Conservation, out of Cortland, to complete preparation of the site and deliver new logs and lumber.

Bring water, broken-in work boots or hiking boots, sturdy leather work gloves, and dress for the weather. Insecticide and sunblock are recommended

Whenever entering the woods, it is always advisable to carry the essential 10, which includes a first aid kit. Carrying a small sheet with emergency contact numbers, health issues that a first responder should be aware of, and identification of your health insurance policy is a great idea.
