This hike will go because Charlie Strohman generously stepped up to lead it.

Tonight our hike completes the Abbott Loop as we hike the south section. This section includes a part of the white-blazed main Finger Lakes Trail and some nice black locust bridges that span a decaying beaver dam built by the Cayuga Trails Club Trails Committee.

The Abbott Loop was created about 25 years ago by Cayuga Trails Club and it is now one of the most popular trails in our area. The Loop would not exist without the persistence and hard work of Cliff and Doris Abbott over several years. The Abbotts also contributed to the quality of local hiking by setting a higher standard for trail maintenance, blazing standards, and trail-head signage.

In that era there was not universal agreement within the club that hiking trails should be better maintained and blazed. The Abbotts met resistance to their efforts to cut back brush and opening up trail-heads so they could be more easily found and the trail more easily hiked. Eventually their point of view won out, and the hiking trails maintained by Cayuga Trails Club have since improved. Hikers in our area owe Cliff and Doris Abbott a debt of gratitude for the legacy they left: better trail maintenance and creation of a quality hiking trail, the Abbott Loop.

This hike is a loop. We will park cars where the orange-blazed Abbott Loop crosses Michigan Hollow Rd. (south crossing) and shuttle to our starting point.

Bring sturdy, broken-in waterproof hiking boots or shoes, water, and insecticide if you use it to ward off ticks.

Directions to trail-head: From Ithaca, take Route 96B South past Ithaca College. Go through the hamlet of Danby. On the south side of town, look for Michigan Hollow Rd., a right turn. Turn right on Michigan Hollow Rd. Go approximately 3.5 miles until you reach the south crossing of the Abbott Loop, which is blazed orange. Look for cars and hikers gathering.

Do not park at the north crossing of the FLT, which is blazed white.
